Labor Day Weekend events

There are so many different events going on for Labor Day weekend! It is time to enjoy the last long weekend of summer with three wonderful events happening around the area this weekend.
The 38th annual Commonwheel Artists Labor Day Arts and Crafts Festival runs all weekend, September 1, 2, and 3 from 10am to 5 pm.

Admission is FREE!

There are approximately 110 artists all chosen from a jury of professional artists. There will be live entertainment, food, kids' art activities, and prizes. It's a wonderful event for the whole family. It's down in Manitou's Memorial Park. This is one of the best places to find high quality art on the Front Range (Don't forget! It will be a great place to look for unique Christmas presents!) Check out the website for more details.

Every year during Labor Day Weekend we are enchanted by the Colorado Balloon Classic.
It is so much fun to see the brightly colored floating spots all weekend. This seems to be a favorite among locals and has become part of the Labor Day weekend tradition.

This is the 36th annual classic and Colorado's largest air show. And addmission is free! Children just love this event. It can be viewed throughout most of the city but Memorial Park in Colorado Springs is where the balloons take off. Check out their website for more details.

The 4th Annual Native American Day is held at the Dinosaur Research Center in Woodland Park.
There will be Native American art, dancing, food, and music. There will also be someone there from the Rocky Mountain Wildlife Foundation with wolves!
The event goes from 11am-to 4pm on September 1st.  Check out their website for more details.

Colorado Pride

August 1st was Colorado Day.
It was the 135th anniversary of Colorado becoming a state from a territory, making us the 36th state in the Union!

The local merchants, us included, are showing their Colorado pride by hanging up Colorado flags. Manitou Avenue is a sea of blue, white, red, and yellow.
We actually have two!!! (Randy got one for his birthday.)
You have to love the wind in Colorado, that it can blow flags 15th feet away from each other in opposite directions!

Just for fun, here are some interesting Colorado facts to go along with our flags
  1. "Beulah red" is the name of the red marble that gives the Colorado State Capitol its special coloring. It took 6 years to cut, polish, and install the marble in the Capitol, from 1894 to 1900. 2. Colorado is the only state in history, to turn down the Olympics. In 1976 the Winter Olympics were planned to be held in Denver. 62% of all state Voters choose not to host the Olympics, because of the cost, pollution and population boom it would have on the State of Colorado, and the City of Denver.
  3. The United States Air Force Academy is in Colorado Springs.
  4. The world's largest flat-top mountain is in Grand Mesa.
  5. Supposedly the invention of the cheeseburger happened in Denver. The trademark for the name Cheeseburger was awarded in 1935 to Louis Ballast.
