Romantic Getaway or Colorado Honeymoon

The Avenue Hotel Bed and Breakfast is the perfect place for a romantic getaway or a fabulous but  less expensive Colorado honeymoon. There is a reason why we were rated the Best B &B in the Springs 2012 by the Gazette readers for the second year in a row! Walk into our doors and you will quickly find out why.

The Avenue Hotel Bed and Breakfast harkens back to a forgotten era. You can just feel the old-world elegance and Victorian romance engulfing the place. It’s not hard to imagine literary characters like Elizabeth Bennett or Edward Rochester visiting on their way through town.

One thing that sets bed and breakfasts apart  is that you will feel like you are at a second home almost as soon as you walk through the doors. There is a lot of character and warmth in a bed and breakfast. Here at the Avenue Hotel Bed and Breakfast, Gwenn, the innkeeper, makes sure that there is a personal touch to very stay, whether it’s one of our fabulous romantic packages, the exquisite breakfasts, or calling for reservations for a local restaurant.

Let us not forget the breakfast part! Every morning you will get a hot, fresh, homemade breakfast from Gwenn, who has won awards for her baking. We have been told by several guests the breakfast them full all day. They might not have to eat again until dinner. She is also able to do an abbreviated breakfast for those that want to get up early and go play.

Not everyone wants the honeymoon to Hawaii and many of us cannot afford it with everything going on in our world right now. Here at the Avenue Hotel Bed and Breakfast we strive to make every trip paradise and memorable. Here are some of our recommendations for a less expensive honeymoon:
  1. We are a beautiful location to stay in. The Avenue Hotel is snuggled in Historic Manitou Springs in one of the most beautiful places in Colorado. You will be surrounded by mountains and wonderful views!
  2. Romantic atmosphere! All of our rooms are professionally decorated with history and taste in mind. One of our most romantic rooms is the Osage Room.
  3. Everyone likes something different, especially when it comes to food. In Historic Manitou we have several different varieties of restaurants from Mid-Eastern, to Mexican, to Polish, and everything in between!
  4. Plan on an area where there are a lot of things to do. If you are on a budget you want to be able to afford to do things. In our area we have a plethora of things to keep you busy and your budget intact. There are numerous hiking and biking trails. We keep the rooms stocked with travel information for all the wonderful sights. There are many different events throughout the year here in Manitou that you might want to schedule for. Click here for a calendar of events. We are also only minutes away from Dowtown Colorado Springs and Old Colorado City.
  5. “We’re not really outdoorsy people. Is there anything else for us to do in town?” Several! Manitou is home to many different art galleries. There are Art Walks every 3rd Friday of the month that tour the galleries. During the summer the Iron Springs Chateau is up and running with their classic vaudeville shows. There are many wonderful shops in the area for an exquisite shopping experience. Window shopping is always fun so when your beloved sees something they really like you can run back later when they are not around and buy it for a surprise. (That is what we call Brownie points!)
  6. Need some relaxing after a wedding or just trying to get away? We have a wonderful Couples Massage available.
  7. “But do you have a fireplace?” You better believe it. Every room comes equipped with an electric fireplace to do to the Old World charm and romance.
  8. “Well we are really on a budget and probably won’t be leaving the room much. Any recommendations?” Here at the Avenue Hotel we plan for this as well. Every room comes with a TV and DVD player and we have a wide variety of movies to choose from, for no extra cost. We have free WIFI for those downtimes. We also have multiple different packages to choose from to help enhance the romantic mood.

The Avenue Hotel Bed and Breakfast wants to cater to you. We have been the hot spot for romance. We have had numerous engagements take place underneath our roofs and many splendid anniversaries celebrated with us. What can we do to make your romantic time even better?

The History of Bed and Breakfasts

Bed and breakfasts, like our darling Avenue Hotel Bed and Breakfast, have a history of comfort and charm.
Bed and breakfasts, like many classy things, started over in Europe catering to travelers just like they do today. In Europe, after World War II, soldiers were left waiting for transport home, according to Open Your Own Bed and Breakfast, Fourth Edition by Barbara Notarius and Gail Sforza Brewer. Young women or families opened their homes to these young men, offering a room, a hearty breakfast, and advice on local attractions in return for a few dollars. Even after the young men were gone, entrepreneurial spirits kept their doors open to other travelers.

The idea spread across the globe. You can find B and B environments in any country in the world, where friendly hosts make their living by offering one-of-a-kind fare and rooms to small numbers of travelers.

They didn't catch on in the United States until the 1960's although there were several starting in the 1800's. These early establishments were frequented by pioneers traveling out west. They were usually a private residence with numerous rooms that were rented out and breakfast was served in the morning before they headed out on the road again. A lot of places catered to certain types of people like doctors and lawyers in one and real pioneers in others. They have become particularly popular in mountain areas, like here in Colorado, and out east in New England.

Our own Avenue Hotel Bed and Breakfast was the first in Manitou Springs. We have been nestled here for the last 30 years. We have restored much of it to its original Victorian spenldor, very much like how the original visitors would have seen it.

Valentine Rose

The tradition of giving the Valentine rose to someone you love got started in the middle ages. The Romans believe Cupid, the son of Venus, was bringing sweet nectar to the gods on Olympus when he dropped some of the nectar on the ground. Out of the spilled drink grew a rose. Because Cupid is god of love, the rose became considered the flower of love. Thus, the signature gift of Valentine's Day.
